“On Friday the 26th of February at 5:30pm, Edinburgh Model UN will open its ScotMUN conference with a keynote speech by Hind El Arabi; we would like to invite you to attend.
Mrs El Arabi is a Palestinian lady who works extensively with women in refugee camps in Gaza, as Women’s Program Coordinator for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
UNRWA provides assistance, protection and advocacy for some 4.7 million registered Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the occupied Palestinian territory, pending a solution to the region’s dilemma.
El Arabi is Program Officer for the Sulafa Embroidery project, a scheme working with 400 women from 8 refugee camps in the Gaza Strip. Embroidery has vast cultural significance for Palestinian women; the painstaking creating of beautiful wedding costumes is a source of real pride. Before they even reach their teens, most girls can produce the exquisitely detailed panels of bridal garments. The women earn £26 a month, on average through the program, a significant sum in an area where most live below the poverty line (less than £1.50 a day per household). “
Mrs El Arabi will give a presentation and then take questions. The event will take place from 5:30 to 6:30pm on Friday 26th of February in Lecture Theatre 5, Appleton Tower; the dress code is smart casual. All are welcome.”
Many thanks in advance.
